In 1790, a band of Lipan Apache moved into this area one mile from the Spanish fort Presidio del Norte, as part of an agreement with the Spanish. That fort evolved into the town of Presidio, which grew and eventually engulfed the Lipan Apache community. And roads and homes were built over much of the Lipan Apache burial grounds as the town of Presidio grew. But in recent years, the cemetery has been deeded back to the tribe. And infrastructure has been added to the site to preserve the cemetery
