A blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more deep veins in the body, generally in the legs, and causes deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A blood clot might become lodged in a blood vessel in your lung if it escapes from your body and travels through your bloodstream. Medics refer to this as a PE, or pulmonary embolism.
