Lighthouses were used to help sailors navigate dark and stormy weather. But if they were out on the water and weren't sure where they were, how did they know which light they were looking at? Each lighthouse had a "signature flash", using color and timing to distinguish from one another. For example, Split Rock was a white flash every 10 seconds.
