Attack The Tirpitz! - Handley Page Halifax Mk II W1048. Handley Page Halifax Mk II W1048 is one of the most evocative aircraft in the collection of the RAF Museum. Built in 1942 and flown by No. 35 Squadron, the bomber took part in a daring low-level attack against the German battleship Tirpitz in Norway. Badly damaged by heavy flak, W1048 was forced to crash-land on a frozen lake, where the crew survived but the aircraft eventually sank beneath the ice. Recovered in 1973, the Halifax is display
