In this era of small acreage homesteads, Dexter cattle are where it's at. They can provide a family of four an adequate amount of beef, dairy and even some tractor work if you're so inclined. While most are not considered miniature cattle sized, Dexters are smaller than typical breeds which makes them ideal for the beginning cattleman. They are known for their friendly disposition, including the bulls. Since they are smaller in size they need less acreage (1 per 1-2 acres here in Northeast Oklah

This feeder came from an veteran farmer that used to raise Dexter cattle. We made a few adjustments to better serve our Highlands as they have much wider horn sets than the Dexter breed. It has worked out pretty well for us. The boys usually take over the feeder while the ladies prefer the hay trailer with the calves at their side.
