The long trill of American Toads (Anaxyrus americanus) is a common sound on March nights. This native toad can be found across the eastern US in woodlands, grassy fields, and roadsides. During late winter and spring, they mate in shallow, fish-free pools of water. The females then lay thousands of eggs in a pair of long, spiraling threads. If you’re old enough to know what a telephone cord looks like, the egg masses sort of look like that. 🤣 | Southern Piedmont Natural History
