James began his time with the Art Institute of Chicago in 1998 as associate curator of contemporary art. From 2004 through 2016, he served as Dittmer Chair and Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and defined the museum’s internationally respected collection of global contemporary art—one that continues to grow in size and regard.

Jan 28, 2016 · James Rondeau joined the Art Institute of Chicago in 1998 as an Associate Curator of Contemporary Art and rose to become department chair in 2004. From 2004-2014 he defined the museum’s internationally respected contemporary art program, taking on the additional interim role of Curator and Chair of Photography from 2008-2009.

James Rondeau is the President and Eloise W. Martin Director of the Art Institute of Chicago. Prior to this position, Rondeau led two of the eleven curatorial departments at the museum as the Dittmer Chair and Curator in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art from 2004–2015, as well as Chair and Curator of Photography from 2008–2009.
