Mott is a Preakness victory away from taking the career Triple Crown, but the 71-year-old trainer won't have a chance to win it with Sovereignty, opting instead to hold the colt out until the Belmont Stakes.

Horse racing will not have a Triple Crown winner this year. Sovereignty, who won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, is skipping the Preakness Stakes on May 17 at Pimlico Race Course and will instead prepare for the Belmont Stakes in early June.

In total, 13 horses have won the Triple Crown, which consists of winning the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in the same year. Justify was the most recent to win the Triple Crown in 2018. American Pharoah's 2015 Triple Crown victory in 2015 broke a 37-year drought dating to Affirmed's run in 1978.
