The United States has ended federal protections shielding thousands of migrants from Nicaragua and Honduras from deportation, angering immigration and civil rights advocacy groups.

The move comes after a federal judge in New York last week blocked the Trump administration from ending temporary legal status for more than 500,000 Haitians living in the United States.

The Trump administration has ended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for over 52,000 Hondurans and nearly 3,000 Nicaraguans, citing recovery from 1998’s Hurricane Mitch. DHS says conditions are now safe for return.
