Hysteria!' forges its own wild and wicked path. The result is a series that’s surprisingly singular and pretty damn entertaining.

Perhaps the most famous example of mass hysteria in recent memory is the Satanic Panic of the 1980s (the setting for Hysteria!, Peacock’s new horror series starring Bruce Campbell, Julie Bowen, and Anna Camp), but it’s far from the only one. Mass hysterias of all kinds crop up rapidly and disappear just as quickly inside isolated groups of people.

A TV series about 1980s thrash metal and the Satanic-panic insanity it begat should, by definition, be a fast, furious, and funny affair. Yet Hysteria! is so slow and distended that it proves an affront to the musical genre it purports to love.
