A Maryland judge ordered the Trump administration to reinstate thousands of probationary employees slashed from the federal workforce, stopping short of a nationwide injunction previously used against the White House.

The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Monday to put on hold a federal judge’s ruling reinstating thousands of probationary federal employees who were fired as part of the government’s efforts to quickly downsize its workforce.

The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court for an emergency stay of a judge's order that 16,000 terminated federal probationary employees be reinstated.

The court papers suggest that the administration has set a low bar for seeking the removal of the Venezuelan migrants, whom officials have described as belonging to the street gang, Tren de Aragua.

The Trump administration said it made an “administrative error” in deporting a suspected MS-13 gang member to an El Salvador prison despite an immigration judge’s order barring his removal to that nation.

A military plane ferried 17 more people accused of being gang members to a prison in El Salvador. The White House said it was acting under a different legal authority than the one a judge blocked with a temporary order.
