A rescue operation is under way after the avalanche swept away road construction workers in the village of Mana.

The incident occurred near the Mana Pass in northern Uttarakhand state on Friday, initially trapping 55 construction workers.

Rescue crews are battling heavy snowfall and poor visibility in the search for survivors after an avalanche near India's border with Tibet. Dozens of construction workers were initially buried under the snow.
