N UUK, Greenland — Greenland’s likely new prime minister on Wednesday rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s effort to take control of the island, saying Greenlanders must be allowed to decide their own future as it moves toward independence from Denmark.

Donald Trump’s desire to take over Greenland brought unprecedented global attention to this week’s election. But calls for independence weren’t the only issue at stake in the election debate, and there’s little support for integration with the US.

Greenland’s pro-business opposition party won the Arctic island’s closely-watched parliamentary election on Tuesday, following a race dominated both by US President Donald Trump’s annexation threat and growing calls from residents for independence from Denmark.
