City officials say 10 Israelis were arrested ahead of Thursday's soccer match; Dutch police warn of fresh calls for rioting after anti-Israel protesters set fire to tram car Monday

Mayor Femke Halsema was speaking at an emergency meeting of the Amsterdam city council days after the Dutch capital was rocked by violence between Israeli football fans and men on scooters in several areas of the city.

Israeli fans were assaulted after a soccer game in Amsterdam by hordes of young people apparently riled up by calls on social media to target Jewish people, Dutch authorities said Friday.

Amsterdam’s mayor condemned the attacks on the Israeli fans, some of whom had been chanting anti-Arab slogans, saying there was “no excuse.” Police said five people were sent to the hospital.

Amsterdam has banned demonstrations for three days after Israeli soccer fans were beaten and injured in violent clashes in the city overnight, which Dutch authorities condemned Friday as antisemitic.

Those arrested are accused of public disorder, vandalism, and illegal possession of fireworks. Among 62 arrested, four including two minors, remain in custody, facing charges of using open violence during the riots. The attacks left five people seriously injured, while around 30 sustained injuries.

Amsterdam authorities are preparing for another night of protests just one day after three people were arrested for smashing a window of a tram. This comes days after an attack on Israeli soccer fans.

The violent assaults have set off a charged debate over antisemitism in the Netherlands and the country’s success in integrating immigrants.
