Despite the monumental deluge Helene dumped on the region in late September and the catastrophic flooding, officials have warned about elevated wildfire risks.

The largest of the blazes, the Palisades Fire, is more than 37 square miles. That’s more than half the land size of Washington, D.C. A second fire, the Eaton Fire, is now more than 22 square miles.

That figure is down from seven at one point last week, when powerful winds that contributed to fire conditions described by firefighters as the worst they've seen fanned flames in Los Angeles County.
