As I speculated here on Lions Wire two weeks ago, Onwuzurike might only receive a short-term deal due to his almost unprecedented recovery from a 2022 L5-S1 spinal fusion. He may be only the second player to have returned to the NFL from this surgery (the other player is alluded to but unnamed in a story written by Onwuzurike ).

A second-round pick out of Washington in 2021, defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike was the second-ever draft pick by Lions general manager Brad Holmes.

Onwuzurike is a flexible interior defensive lineman who can also bounce outside. He got the majority of his work last season rushing the passer.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Detroit Lions are re-signing defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike to a 1-year $5.5 million contract extension. Onwuzurike was drafted by the Lions in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft (the first of the Brad Holmes/Dan Campbell regime) with high expectations.
