Everyone from senior citizens to young adults and kids are playing the sport. Thomas said a local woman recently celebrated her 94th birthday at a Parks Tacoma pickleball court.

More than 400 kids picked up paddles in the suburbs to try to break the record for world's largest pickleball lesson.

“I like to play in the middle of the day with my friends and with my dad,” 7-year-old Matthew McGowan said. Beyond the physical benefits, pickleball also fosters important social skills.

“Right now there’s a place in Ann Arbor that I go to, Wolverine Pickleball, and I have to travel 45 minutes to play in the wintertime because we have nothing," she said.

That’s why they had kids from the west side club play some practice games at the pickleball courts on the third floor of the Sports Basement, which has 16,000 square feet for community use.
