Melissa’s death toll surpasses 29: Deadly Category 5 hurricane began its path through the Caribbean yesterday
Several Caribbean islands are under hurricane watches and warnings for the impacts of Hurricane Melissa, according to the National Hurricane Center. Melissa has already had deadly impacts on communities in the Caribbean.
The scale of the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa is emerging, with dozens of people known to have died in Haiti and four deaths reported in Jamaica - and the storm is now approaching the Bahamas.
Hurricane Melissa, which is stronger than Hurricane Katrina, is set to bring catastrophic winds, flash flooding and high storm surges to the island of Jamaica.
Liberty Caribbean is working with Starlink to provide direct-to-cell coverage across Jamaica, as terrestrial networks have been severely impacted. An additional spectrum bandwidth license was awarded to Flow by the country's government to support the response efforts.
While Hurricane Melissa has cleared Jamaica and winds are substantially lower, there will still be some thunderstorms across the island. The National Hurricane Center warns that an additional 3-6 inches (7-15cm) of rain is possible in parts, with up to 30 inches over mountainous areas.
Yesterday Melissa made landfall over southwestern Jamaica as a strong category 5 hurricane. It struck around New Hope, Jamaica with sustained winds of 185mph. The hurricane caused widespread damage over a huge section of the island.
