Iran arrests two marathon organisers after hijab breach
TEHRAN: Iranian authorities have arrested two organisers of a marathon on Kish island, the judiciary said o, after images emerged of women competing without hijab.
The Iranian judiciary says two organisers of a marathon have been arrested for allowing women who were not wearing hijabs to take part. The move comes after images appeared online of unveiled women competing in the race on Friday. Around 2,000 women and 3,000 men took part separately in the marathon on Kish Island off the southern coast of Iran.
The organizers “did not take these warnings seriously” and violated “public decency,” a public prosecutor told state media.
Iran’s looming fuel hike is reviving memories of the deadly 2019 uprising, raising fears that economic pressure could ignite fresh unrest.
