Skype has agreed to acquire New York-based start-up GroupMe, a move that gets the Internet-calling giant into the increasingly crowded business of providing group messaging services on smartphones.

Skype has agreed to acquire group messaging app start-up GroupMe, the companies announced Sunday. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the price has been reported at $80 million to $85 million.
