M87*, the supermassive black hole residing in the galaxy Messier 87, is famously the first black hole ever photographed by the Earth-based paparazzi at the Event Horizon Telescope project.
It comes from the same team of over 300 international scientists at the Event Horizon Telescope that has already produced: The first-ever image of a black hole’s event horizon in 2018 (M87).
Immortalized by the Event Horizon Telescope in 2019, M87* , was recently spotted emitting a massive gamma-ray flare. Studying it may help scientists figure out how particles behave near black holes.
