Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced Thursday that he will act later in the day to advance a bipartisan government funding bill after Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) failed to pass a partisan six-month funding measure that was tied to voter registration reform.

The House has rejected Speaker Mike Johnson's bill to temporarily fund the government. The legislation that failed Wednesday would have linked temporary government funding with a mandate that states require proof of citizenship when people register to vote.

House Speaker Mike Johnson’s spending bill was rejected by Congress on Wednesday after 14 Republicans joined Democrats in voting against the stopgap measures—even after the speaker attached a Trump-endorsed voter registration act to the legislation. The House now has until Sept. 30 to pass a spending bill or face a government shutdown.
