With many committing to health goals for the new year, “Dry January” is trending all over social media. A Columbus addiction specialist offered his thoughts on the movement which encourages folks to stop drinking alcohol during the first month of the year.

Millennials and Generation Z were more inclined to participate in Dry January this time last year, according to Statista. Among those aged 21 to 24, 75% indicated they were at least somewhat likely to join, compared to just 31% of individuals aged 55 and older.

The idea of going sober for a limited time can be appealing — research shows even a temporary dry spell offers some health benefits.

According to Harvard Health, heavier drinking or long-term drinking can increase physical and mental problems, especially among older adults. Heart and liver damage, a higher cancer risk, a weakened immune system, memory issues, and mood disorders are common issues, health officials said.
