Beautiful and unique canyon. A little busy and guard rails everywhere. The best view is the final view at the top with the waterfall and large platform. The walk to that point can be a satisfying jou… Full review by Chad2014

It's amazing place! You can easily park your car next to start of the route (pay for parking using Parka app), and go upstairs about 1km. Here you can use drone, if you have. Videos are great! :) Full review by IvarsLV

The Fjadrargljufur Canyon should be on your stop on the ring road in Iceland. It's super easy to get to. There are two car parks, an upper and a lower. We went for the lower one and you can hike … Full review by doublej21

Your post is very helpful, especially the map. We plan to visit the canyon during a trip to Iceland in late June 2023. My wife has some mobility issues so we would prefer going to the “easier side”. How long is the trip on the “bumpy dirt road”? Could a basic small car (not 4WD) be OK on the dirt road?

I would say the same, the road isn't long at all and unless it rained or it's winter time it's definitely fine in a regular car - considering you had mentioned mobility issues I am not sure if it's a good idea as - if you choose to go the paved route 206 you will need to go up quite a few stairs and from here it's you will walk to the "main platform" = longer walk, if you end up choosing however the F206 you will be super close but here you end up on the higher elevation and need you to walk downhill (thus return uphill) - it's a not a bad walk or challenging at all on this side but I would definitely go this F206 route instead - shorter/easier and the incline/uphill is via car

Q:
I see that this has been closed the last couple years in the spring, but reopens around June 1st. Is this something that typically happens every spring? I am visiting the area about May 7-8, and would like to know if it will be possible to visit so I can book my airbnbs accordingly. If it is closed, will we still be able to access the an area with a great view? Or would the entrance/road be totally closed off? Thank you!
A:
My understanding is that the previous closure had been to allow the area to recover from damage done to it after thousands of Justin Beiber fans flocked there to see it following a video …

My wife and I will be visiting Fjadrargljufur Canyon next June and we will be driving a 2wd car. I am pleased to learn that this poster believes that we will be “fine” as long as we drive slow. However, other posters note that you need to have 4wd to get to the upper canyon parking area. Could others weigh in and clarify if a 2wd car is OK. Thank you.

Good morning, if you want to drive to the upper parking lot you will need a 4x4 since the road is a mountain road (marked F206 to Laki). However if you continue the 206 you can reach the lower parking lot were a 2x2 car is sufficient. The road 206 is part asphalt and part gravel, just drive carefully on the gravel part. Patricia- Our tour group was let off at the upper parking lot and walked down to the lower one - easily done in 30 minutes or so (add ten for more photo stops). Jens is correct - no walking allowed in the valley itself (unless you're filming a new episode of Game of Thrones?? some scenes were filmed there) The path slopes gradually downhill - - if you have any doubts, bring a collapsible walking stick. You'll be fine.
