Parking in Susanville is generally safe. We've left cars overnight at the Westwood parking area, and even though it's somewhat remote we had no problems. If I had a choice I'd leave them in Susanville as it's a real town, with real police :)
I see there is bus service on the weekends. What about the possibility of shuttling one person to the west end of the trail on a week day. It says this is a "typical question" but I don't see where the typical questions are answered.
